Privacy Policy

The Yips is a golf stats tracker built for golfers who want to understand and improve their game. This policy explains what data the app collects, how it's used, and your rights around it.

What We Collect

• Account information: your name and email address when you sign in with Google.
• Golf data: rounds, scores, hole-by-hole stats, shot distances, club selections, and course information you enter or record in the app.
• Location data: GPS coordinates captured during a round to measure shot distances. When you start a round, your phone's location is also used to find nearby courses and, for courses we have no coordinates for, to look up the weather. Location is only accessed when you start a round or use shot tracking.
• Device information: basic device identifiers used for authentication and app functionality.
• Usage and diagnostics: anonymous usage events (for example: a round was started or completed, the subscription screen was viewed), crash and error reports, the app version, and when you last used the app. When a round is started, the event includes the name of the golf course you selected from our course directory, so we can make sure it has accurate green maps. These are tied to a random per-install identifier, not to your name or email, and never include your scores, shots, or GPS coordinates.

How We Use It

• To provide the app's core features: round tracking, strokes gained analysis, and club performance stats.
• To sync your data across devices via The Yips API (our backend, hosted in the United States).
• To calculate your handicap differential and strokes gained metrics.
• To improve the app based on aggregate, anonymized usage patterns, and to find and fix crashes.
• To train and improve the AI Caddy feature using anonymized shot, distance, and club data. This data is stripped of all personally identifiable information before use.

We do not sell your data. We do not use your golf data for advertising.

Third-Party Services

• Google Sign-In: used for authentication. Subject to Google's Privacy Policy.
• PostHog: anonymous product analytics, processed in the United States. Subject to PostHog's Privacy Policy.
• Open-Meteo: weather lookup when you start a round. The request carries coordinates rounded to about 1 km, either the course's or, if we have none for the course, your phone's, plus your IP address as with any web request. Subject to Open-Meteo's terms and privacy policy.
• Sentry: crash and error reporting. Subject to Sentry's Privacy Policy.

Opting Out of Analytics

Anonymous usage analytics and crash reports are on by default. You can turn them off at any time in the app under Settings → Privacy → "Share anonymous usage data". When it is off, the app sends no analytics events or crash reports.

This Website

theyips.app uses Cloudflare Web Analytics to count page views and referrers. It sets no cookies, does not track you across sites, and does not build a profile of you.

Data Retention

Your data is retained as long as your account is active. You can request deletion of your account and all associated data at any time by contacting us.

Your Rights

You can request access to, correction of, or deletion of your personal data at any time. To do so, email us at the address below.

Children

The Yips is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect data from children under 13.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this policy as the app evolves. Material changes will be noted with an updated effective date at the top of this page.
